Why Replace Your Window Sills, Lintels, and Angle Irons?

Window sills, lintels, and angle irons are essential structural and architectural elements in masonry buildings, especially brick constructions common in Quebec. Over time, exposure to harsh weather (freeze-thaw cycles, moisture, and road salt) causes deterioration, leading to water infiltration, cracks, bulging walls (ventres-de-bœuf), and even structural risks. Replacing them restores the integrity of the wall, improves waterproofing, and increases the value of your property.

What is a Window Sill (Allège)?

The window sill is the lower portion of the wall located beneath the window, between the floor (or finished ground) and the bottom of the window opening. It can be made of masonry (concrete, stone, or brick) or glazed (fixed glass panel).

What is its purpose?

  • Supports the weight of the window and ensures proper sealing.

  • Directs rainwater away from the wall thanks to its slope and drip edge.

  • Contributes to safety (minimum height to prevent falls, often 90 cm per building codes).

  • Improves thermal and acoustic insulation.

  • Enhances the aesthetics and proportions of the facade.

Lifespan

A concrete window sill typically lasts 50 years or more, while a natural stone sill can last 75 years or longer, depending on exposure to the elements. Signs of deterioration include cracks, crumbling, or water leaks.

What is a Lintel?

The lintel is a horizontal structural piece placed above an opening (window, door, or garage door). It can be made of concrete, stone, steel, or wood.

What is its purpose?

  • Supports the load of the wall and upper floors above the opening.

  • Distributes the weight to the sides (on the abutments) to prevent collapse.

  • Can serve a decorative role (ornate or molded lintels on heritage buildings).

Lifespan

Decorative concrete lintels generally have a service life of 50 to 75 years. They crack or crumble due to freeze-thaw cycles and moisture. A failing lintel can cause major structural damage.

What is an Angle Iron (Cornière)?

The angle iron (also called a steel lintel or corner iron) is an L-shaped steel piece often installed above openings or at wall corners.

What is its purpose?

  • Supports the brick veneer above windows and doors.

  • Ensures the stability of the masonry wall.

  • Transfers loads without relying solely on the window or door frame.

Lifespan Older non-galvanized steel angle irons typically rust after 30 to 50 years, causing expansion and cracks in the brickwork. Modern galvanized steel versions offer much greater durability with minimal maintenance.

Signs That It’s Time to Replace These Elements

  • Visible cracks around windows and doors.

  • Crumbling concrete or stone.

  • Water infiltration or moisture stains inside the home.

  • Bulging brick walls (ventres-de-bœuf).

  • Rust or deformation on angle irons.

  • Windows that are difficult to open or close.

Benefits of Professional Replacement

  • Safety: Reinforced structure and compliance with current building codes.

  • Energy Savings: Better airtightness and insulation.

  • Aesthetics: Faithful restoration matching the original look (heritage patterns available).

  • Durability: Use of high-quality modern materials adapted to the Quebec climate (high-performance concrete, galvanized steel).

  • Increased Property Value.
